EGYPT DRAWS WITH IRAN AS LATE GOAL RULED OFFSIDE

SAT 27 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

Egypt and Iran finished their Group G match at 1-1 in Seattle, with Iran denied a potential winner in the final moments when a goal was ruled out for offside. Iran also struck the crossbar late in the match during what was described as a thrilling encounter. The draw leaves Iran requiring qualification via the ranking of third-placed teams to progress to the FIFA World Cup knockout stages, as they cannot now guarantee a top-two finish in their group.

The match took place in Group G of the FIFA World Cup tournament. Iran's late opportunities came in dramatic fashion, with the disallowed goal and crossbar strike occurring in the closing stages of play. Egypt secured one goal during the fixture, whilst Iran matched that tally.

Iran will now await final group results to determine whether they qualify as one of the top eight third-placed teams in the tournament. The outcome means Iran's progression to the knockout round is no longer guaranteed by their own result alone. Egypt's position in Group G also remains to be clarified depending on other group matches and final standings.
