TREVOR NELSON TAKES BREAK FROM BBC RADIO 2 OVER HEALTH ISSUES

SAT 27 JUN 2026

Trevor Nelson has announced he is taking a break from broadcasting after being advised to undergo medical tests following a routine check-up. The BBC Radio 2 presenter and DJ made the announcement on Instagram, stating he had not been on air during the week and would be taking further time off to focus on his health. Nelson said he was "concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and to getting back behind the mic and the decks", and stated that he would not speculate about his condition whilst dealing with the health issues.

Nelson has spent 30 years at the BBC championing black music in the UK, with a significant influence on R&B, soul and hip-hop broadcasting. He presents the daily Radio 2 slot and also works with BBC Radio 1Xtra. The presenter received messages of support from musicians including Stormzy, Alesha Dixon and Lemar, as well as fellow BBC radio presenter Lauren Laverne. Singer and presenter Fleur East and singer Beverley Knight also sent messages of encouragement.

Lorna Clarke, the BBC's director of music, said the organisation wished Nelson "a very speedy recovery" and looked forward to his return "whenever he is ready". The announcement came during the same week Nelson received an award from the Television and Radio Industries Club in recognition of his broadcasting career. No timeline for his return to broadcasting has been confirmed.
