CAPE VERDE REACH WORLD CUP KNOCKOUT ROUNDS IN DEBUT

Cape Verde advanced to the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup following a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia. The result allowed Cape Verde to finish second in Group H, securing qualification for the knockout stage in their first World Cup appearance. Saudi Arabia was eliminated from the tournament. The draw took place during the group stage in Qatar.

Cape Verde's progression represents their first World Cup tournament after qualifying for the 2026 finals. The team's performances throughout the group stage enabled them to accumulate sufficient points to advance ahead of other contenders in Group H. Saudi Arabia, despite their participation in the group stage, did not accumulate enough points to progress beyond the group phase. The goalless result between the two sides meant neither team could improve their knockout stage prospects through this fixture.

Cape Verde will now face opposition in the round of 32 as one of 32 teams remaining in the tournament. The advancement marks a significant achievement for a nation competing in their inaugural World Cup. Saudi Arabia's elimination concluded their involvement in the 2026 World Cup. Further matches in the knockout rounds will determine which teams advance toward the later stages of the competition.
