VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKE DEATH TOLL REACHES 920 AS AID ARRIVES
Official figures indicate that 920 people have died in earthquakes that struck Venezuela, with more than 3,000 others recorded as injured. International aid has begun arriving in the country, including rescue teams conducting search operations in the rubble of collapsed buildings. Hospitals in the worst affected areas report being overwhelmed by casualties and cite critical shortages of medical supplies.
Jenrry Meija, a former New York Mets pitcher, was in Venezuela at the time of the earthquakes. Meija reported that he narrowly escaped death whilst in a hotel, which he attributed to what he described as divine intervention. He stated that he rescued an elderly man from the building seconds before it collapsed.
Rescue efforts continue across affected regions as international teams work to locate survivors amongst the debris. The scale of the humanitarian need has prompted multiple nations to mobilise assistance to support Venezuelan authorities in response to the disaster. Further updates on casualty figures and the scope of damage are expected as assessment work progresses.
