CFL BANS BRENDAN SORSBY FROM SIGNING WITH ANY TEAM

FRI 26 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

The Canadian Football League announced on Friday that it would not permit any of its teams to sign quarterback Brendan Sorsby, citing "serious and concerning" allegations surrounding the player. The league stated it would not register a contract for Sorsby and that no team would be permitted to add him to its negotiation list. The CFL did not provide specific detail regarding the allegations in its statement.

Sorsby's exclusion from the CFL follows his removal from Texas Tech's roster for the 2026 season. The quarterback sought treatment for a gambling addiction in April, during which he reportedly placed thousands of bets on college football, including wagers on Indiana whilst a member of that team. The NCAA initially declared Sorsby ineligible to play in 2026, but a judge later ruled he would serve a two-game suspension instead. Texas Tech initially accepted that decision but reversed course after the Big 12 conference threatened legal action against the university.

With college football no longer an option, Sorsby applied for the NFL Supplemental Draft. The NFL declined to hold a Supplemental Draft this year and criticised Sorsby for not taking responsibility for his actions. Sorsby now faces limited options to continue his football career during the 2026 season.
