MAN DIES AFTER ROLLING ONTO KNIFE IN RUCKSACK ON BENCH
Robert Brown bled to death on a bench beside a canal footpath in Northampton after accidentally rolling onto a knife stored in his rucksack whilst asleep, an inquest concluded. Mr Brown was discovered by a passing cyclist on 1 August last year at approximately 6:30am with a wound to his arm. The discovery triggered a large-scale police response, with detectives launching extensive searches of the River Nene and arresting three people on suspicion of murder. All three were subsequently released without charge.
According to the inquest hearing, Mr Brown had last been seen visiting a supermarket the day before his death. The five-inch single-edged blade penetrated through his rucksack and three layers of his coat, cutting his arm and causing a 3cm wound that resulted in catastrophic blood loss. The blade did not sever any arteries, the inquest heard. Mr Brown had struggled with alcohol dependency and may have fallen into a deep sleep, placing his weight onto the rucksack in a manner that caused the knife to penetrate the bag and his clothing.
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of Northamptonshire Police stated that detectives initially considered whether Mr Brown had been killed by a third party, or whether the death was accidental or self-inflicted. The police force dropped the murder investigation in February 2026 and concluded the injury was "likely to have been unintentionally self-inflicted". Northamptonshire senior coroner Anne Pember ruled the case a "tragic accident".
