DC STUDIOS CHIEF SEEKS TO REBUILD FAN TRUST WITH SUPERGIRL RELEASE

FRI 26 JUN 2026 FILM

Peter Safran, who runs DC Studios alongside director James Gunn, stated that the studio must work to restore audience confidence following a series of underperforming films. Supergirl, released this week and directed by Craig Gillespie, is the second major release in DC Studios' rebooted cinematic universe, following last year's Superman. The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara-Zor-El, alongside Jason Momoa and Eve Ridley. Safran told BBC Newsbeat that the new direction represented an attempt to "get back on track".

The film follows Kara-Zor-El on her 23rd birthday as she embarks on a quest to save her dog, Krypto, after it is poisoned, with support from character Ruthye Marye Knoll and bounty hunter Lobo. Supergirl portrays its title character as a reluctant superhero struggling to adapt to life on Earth after fleeing Krypton as a child. Reviews have been mixed, with most critics praising Alcock's performance but offering less enthusiasm about action sequences. Safran acknowledged that DC Studios' previous output had been "uneven", with some films achieving critical and commercial success whilst others underperformed or were cancelled, such as Batgirl.

Safran stated his intention to "rebuild the trust of the audience, which I think DC had lost over the years". He described the studio's reboot as an attempt to bring DC's characters, including Batman, Wonder Woman and Shazam, "under one creative vision". Safran expressed that he and Gunn held "a big responsibility on our shoulders" and stated they were "thrilled with how it's going so far". The studio's success will depend partly on how audiences receive Supergirl.
