IVORY COAST MANAGER CRITICISES SCHWEINSTEIGER OVER PLAYING STYLE COMMENTS

FRI 26 JUN 2026

Emerse Fae, manager of Ivory Coast, criticised Bastian Schweinsteiger for comments made about his team's playing style ahead of their match against Germany last weekend. Schweinsteiger, speaking on German broadcaster ARD before the fixture, described Ivory Coast's approach as "a bit African football, a bit unorthodox, a bit wild, a bit perhaps also not so conditioned by tactics". Fae stated that such remarks were "sad" and could be considered "racist" if "calling a spade a spade". The Ivory Coast manager expressed disappointment in Schweinsteiger, whom he had admired as a player.

Fae emphasised that African teams possess both physical and technical capabilities, alongside tactical discipline. He suggested that Schweinsteiger's characterisation of his team's style did not reflect the reality of modern African football. The Ivory Coast manager expressed hope that the comments were merely "clumsy" rather than deliberate. Schweinsteiger won the World Cup with Germany in 2014.

When questioned about the controversy, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declined to offer comment, telling German media he had "no chance" to address such a "serious subject". The dispute highlights differing perspectives on how playing styles are described across different footballing regions.
