VAN DRIVER HELPS ARMED POLICE ARREST FLEEING SUSPECT IN MARGATE

A van driver in Margate stopped his vehicle on 16 June to pick up an armed police officer pursuing a fleeing suspect. Body-worn camera footage shows the motorist pulling over and telling the officer to get in the back of the van. The officer instructed the driver to follow a suspect who had run toward Tivoli Road after an assault on High Street. The driver accelerated in pursuit, allowing the armed officer to overtake the suspect and a colleague chasing on foot. Once ahead of the suspect, the van stopped, and the officer made an arrest at gunpoint.

Kent Police said the suspect had initially evaded officers as they attempted to apprehend him following the assault. The driver, who remained unnamed, had observed armed police struggling to keep pace with the fleeing individual. When thanked by the officer after the arrest, the driver said he was glad to be of service and described the experience as exhilarating. Superintendent Will Lay of Kent Police stated that the arrest would not have been possible without the driver's quick actions and use of his vehicle.

Kent Police commended the driver for his public-spirited conduct and contribution to community safety. Superintendent Lay said the driver should feel proud of his assistance and described him as responsible. Kent Police noted that the successful apprehension of what it characterised as a dangerous individual depended on the member of the public's willingness to intervene. The force expressed gratitude for the driver's help in the matter.
