MICROSOFT EXTENDS WINDOWS 10 SECURITY UPDATES TO OCTOBER 2027

FRI 26 JUN 2026

Microsoft has extended the period during which consumer users of Windows 10 can purchase extended security updates. The company altered its support page to allow users to purchase an additional year of patches until October 12, 2027, a shift from the previous deadline of October 13, 2026. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, when it ceased shipping security fixes to users without a paid extended support package. The company charges $30 for one year of extended patch coverage.

The extension reflects the continued widespread use of Windows 10 among consumers. HP reported that 30 per cent of its customers have not yet migrated to Windows 11, whilst StatCounter recorded data suggesting that 26 per cent of Windows users it tracks online continue to use Windows 10. With the global active Windows PC population exceeding one billion, hundreds of millions of machines running the older operating system remain in service. Microsoft offers business customers extended support until 2028, meaning the consumer extension creates minimal additional workload for the company.

The pricing reflects barriers to upgrading. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 hardware, a minimum of 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, specifications that many existing PCs lack. The cost of purchasing new hardware capable of running Windows 11 substantially exceeds the $30 annual charge for extended Windows 10 updates. Microsoft has not publicly explained its reasoning for extending the consumer update deadline.
