WOMAN KILLED, DIVER MISSING AFTER CLIFF COLLAPSE IN BIARRITZ
A cliff collapse in Biarritz, France, on Wednesday night killed one diver and left another missing. The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. near the lighthouse when a large section of coastline gave way, affecting three divers at the cliff's base. One diver escaped uninjured and received assistance from emergency teams. Search operations began immediately for the two remaining divers.
Emergency services recovered the body of a female diver on Wednesday night. Efforts to locate the second missing person continued on Thursday. The collapse followed a pattern of previous instability at the site, with recorded collapses in 2008 and 2018. Officials established a 300-metre exclusion zone around the affected cliff to prevent further incidents.
The exclusion zone prohibits public access, swimming and boating in the area due to the ongoing risk of additional collapse. The search operation remained active as authorities assessed the stability of the remaining cliff face. No further details regarding the identity of those involved or the cause of the collapse have been confirmed.
