UK RECORDS HOTTEST JUNE DAY AT 36.1C IN HAMPSHIRE

THU 25 JUN 2026

The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June day on record on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching 36.1 degrees Celsius in Hampshire, according to the BBC. The Met Office warned that temperatures could rise further on Thursday. A rare red weather warning remained in place until Friday for the south of England as the heatwave continued to affect the country.

Hundreds of schools closed early due to the extreme heat, whilst transport networks experienced significant disruption. Train operators including South Western Railway, Thameslink, Northern and Avanti West Coast advised passengers to undertake essential journeys only and implemented reduced timetables. Transport for London cautioned that very high temperatures could cause disruption to some Tube and rail services, and commuters faced lengthy delays on Wednesday evening.

The Royal College of Physicians reported increased pressure on hospital services, with doctors noting numerous cases of older patients admitted after collapsing from dehydration. The college's members linked the extreme heat to equipment and machinery malfunction in hospital settings. The Met Office cautioned that the conditions could result in "population-wide adverse health effects", potentially leading to serious illness or danger to life.
