OLIVIA WILDE DENIES "SCREAMING MATCH" WITH FLORENCE PUGH ON SET
Olivia Wilde has denied longstanding reports that she had a "screaming match" with Florence Pugh during the filming of Don't Worry Darling. Speaking to The Cut, Wilde stated that allegations of an on-set confrontation were untrue. She said she had never had a screaming match on her set and was always available during production. Wilde added that she had wanted to publicly deny the allegations when they first emerged but was advised against doing so.
In September 2022, a report alleged that tensions between Wilde and Pugh escalated into a "blowout argument" during roughly three-quarters of production. An anonymous source told the outlet that Pugh had grown frustrated with Wilde's "frequent unexplained absences" and with Wilde's relationship with Harry Styles, which became public during the film's promotional period. Wilde said she had been told to remain silent publicly and simply "smile" rather than respond to the allegations. She described resenting that advice but said the experience had taught her she wanted to handle similar situations differently in future.
Don't Worry Darling, Wilde's second directorial feature, followed Pugh's character Alice Chambers as she questions the reality of the community where she lives with her husband, played by Styles. The psychological thriller received mixed critical reviews, though critics largely praised Pugh's performance. The film earned $87.6m worldwide against an estimated $35m budget. Speculation of a feud between Wilde and Pugh intensified after Pugh participated in significantly fewer promotional appearances than expected for a major studio release.
