WIMBLEDON QUALIFYING SUSPENDED AS ELECTRONIC LINE SYSTEM FAILS IN HEAT

WED 24 JUN 2026

Play at Wimbledon qualifying in Roehampton was suspended on Wednesday as temperatures in south west London reached 33C and the tournament's electronic line calling system failed. Players were taken off court shortly after midday. A red weather warning for extreme heat was in force across large parts of England, with the Met Office forecasting record temperatures of 40C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wimbledon implemented a heat rule for this year's tournament, permitting players to request a 10-minute break when the heat stress index reaches or exceeds 30.1C. The heat stress index combines air temperature, humidity and surface temperature to produce a "feels-like" reading also known as Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. Measurements occur 30 minutes before play begins, then at 2pm and 5pm. British player Dan Evans, competing in his final tournament before retirement, was among those affected; he had lost the first set 7-5 to Australia's Tristan Schoolkate when play halted.

Extreme heat has affected multiple grand slam tournaments this season, with the Australian Open recording temperatures of 46C and the French Open experiencing a heatwave. Defending Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner struggled with heat conditions at the French Open and was eliminated in the second round. Wimbledon recorded its hottest opening day in its history at last year's Championship. The main tournament begins on Monday 28 June, and heat may prove a significant factor throughout the fortnight.
