ONE IN FIVE BRITONS HOLD £100,000-PLUS IN CASH ISAS

WED 24 JUN 2026 ECONOMY

More than 1.5 million people hold at least £100,000 in Individual Savings Accounts, according to available data. Financial analysts have warned that keeping substantial sums in cash Isas may result in loss of purchasing power over time due to inflation. The concern centres on the gap between cash Isa interest rates and the rate at which prices rise across the economy.

Cash Isas offer tax-free interest on savings, a key attraction for savers in the United Kingdom. However, financial commentators have noted that if interest rates paid on these accounts fall below the inflation rate, the real value of the money held decreases year on year. Savers with large balances in cash Isas face particular exposure to this erosion, as the nominal amount remains unchanged whilst its ability to purchase goods and services declines.

Financial experts have recommended that savers review the interest rates offered on their cash Isas and consider alternative investments where appropriate. Options discussed include stocks and shares Isas, which offer potential for capital growth, and fixed-rate bonds available outside the Isa wrapper. Savers have been advised to assess their individual circumstances, risk tolerance and savings goals before making any changes to their portfolio allocation.
