SHARK ATTACK VICTIM LEAH STEWART WAKES FROM INDUCED COMA

WED 24 JUN 2026 CRIME

Leah Stewart was attacked by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney on 13 June and sustained life-threatening injuries including severe bites, multiple fractures and major blood loss. After undergoing several surgeries and spending a week on life support, she was brought out of an induced coma for a brief period. During this time, she spoke to her family, saying "I love you" and enquiring about her daughter.

Ms Stewart's brother, Josh Stewart, wrote on a fundraising page that doctors extubated her and reduced her level of sedation to bring her out of the induced coma. He stated that her first thoughts were with her daughter August and that she wanted to confirm the child was safe. Ms Stewart had undergone five days of surgery in the week following the attack and was scheduled for further surgeries. Her family described the brief awakening as faster than expected and said it gave them hope for her long-term recovery.

Ms Stewart remains in intensive care at present. Her family said she faces a prolonged period of recovery, with more surgery planned in the coming weeks. Josh Stewart thanked supporters for their care, prayers, love and financial generosity towards his sister's treatment and recovery.
