MLB COMMISSIONER ADMITS ERROR OVER GIANTS PRIDE NIGHT CAP WARNING
Rob Manfred, MLB Commissioner, admitted in a letter to Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri that the league made a mistake in issuing a warning to San Francisco Giants players for writing Bible verses on Pride Night caps. On 12 June, pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker wrote "Gen 9:12-16" on their rainbow hats during a game against the Chicago Cubs. MLB initially treated the inscriptions as a uniform policy violation. The controversy prompted federal involvement, with the Department of Justice referring the case to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Manfred explained that MLB had agreed with the Giants to make Pride-branded uniforms optional for all players. According to Manfred's account, the Giants failed to communicate this choice clearly to their roster. Consequently, some players did not realise they could wear standard uniforms instead of the Pride-branded caps. After the game concluded, MLB's office issued an oral warning regarding the uniform policy violation. Manfred stated that players were not required to wear Pride logos.
In his letter, Manfred acknowledged that the Giants' internal communication fell short of standards. He promised that MLB would not fine or discipline the players for their religious expression. The matter drew comment from US Vice President JD Vance and other political figures who characterised the initial warning as discriminatory. Manfred's admission represented a reversal of MLB's initial enforcement position in the dispute.
