GERVONTA DAVIS REPLACES CALVIN FORD WITH JOSE BENAVIDEZ SR AS TRAINER
Gervonta Davis is set to return to boxing this autumn under a new trainer, according to reports. Davis will replace long-term head trainer Calvin Ford with Jose Benavidez Sr., father and trainer of unified cruiserweight and WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez. Sources told FightsATW on the condition of anonymity that Davis and Benavidez Sr. worked out together in South Florida several weeks ago to assess their compatibility. The training session reportedly went well, leading to Benavidez Sr. taking on the role of preparing Davis for his next bout.
Davis has fought only once in the past two years, that contest being a draw against Lamont Roach Jr 15 months ago. Following that fight and subsequent issues outside the ring, Davis was downgraded by the WBA from lightweight world champion to WBA champion-in-recess. The vacant world title is expected to be up for grabs, with Floyd Schofield guaranteed involvement in that bout. Reports suggest Davis may face either Schofield or call out super-lightweight and welterweight opportunities against Devin Haney, though no opponent has been officially announced.
With Benavidez Sr. in his corner, observers anticipate Davis may adopt a more aggressive fighting approach in his comeback. The specifics of Davis's next fight remain unconfirmed, including the opponent and exact date. Davis's return marks his first significant ring activity since the contentious draw with Roach Jr.
