SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE INVESTIGATE VIDEO OF OFFICERS WITH TEENAGE GIRLS
South Yorkshire police have opened an investigation into video footage that appears to show officers using force against teenage girls in Rotherham over the weekend. The footage, shared widely on social media, depicts officers shoving at least one teenager, drawing batons and stun guns, and pointing the weapons at the group. The clip shows several teenagers falling to the ground during the incident, with one landing against a police car, and at least six officers in attendance.
In a statement, South Yorkshire police described the video as "nothing short of shocking" and confirmed that the professional standards department is reviewing the footage alongside body-worn camera recordings from the full police response to the 999 call. The force stated it aims to understand events before, during and after what is visible in the social media clip. Police declined to confirm whether any officers had been removed from frontline duties pending completion of the review. South Yorkshire's deputy mayor for policing and crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, said she was horrified by the footage and confirmed a full review is under way.
The investigation will examine whether the officers' actions were lawful, proportionate and fair, according to South Yorkshire police. The force stated that formal restrictions or suspension of officers can only be considered after the professional standards department completes its assessment. The review will include examination of body-worn video and circumstances surrounding the original 999 call.
