UK BANS SOCIAL MEDIA FOR UNDER-16S FROM SPRING

TUE 23 JUN 2026 INTERNET/SOCIAL

The United Kingdom government has announced a ban on social media use by people under 16 years old, to take effect from spring. The exact mechanics of enforcement remain unconfirmed, though officials have indicated that users may need to provide official identification containing their date of birth to access platforms. The ban applies to a wide range of social media services, including YouTube. The government has stated that the measure aims to reduce screen time among young people and encourage engagement in alternative activities.

The announcement follows campaigning by groups including bereaved parents who attribute their children's deaths to harms encountered on social media platforms. The ban represents a potential shift in how young people access information and educational content online. Dr Tom Crawford, who operates the educational mathematics channel Tom Rocks Maths with 250,000 subscribers on YouTube, has stated that YouTube functions as a primary learning resource for teenagers seeking educational material. Implementation of the ban would restrict access to such educational channels for under-16s.

Civil liberties organisations and others have raised concerns about the scope of the proposal, citing potential government overreach and questions about data protection. Critics have also suggested that enforcement may prove difficult, with young people potentially finding methods to circumvent the restrictions. The ban would constitute the largest shift in how UK residents access online platforms in recent years, affecting both minors and adults through widespread identity verification requirements.
