LGBT VETERANS URGED TO REGISTER FOR COMPENSATION BEFORE DEADLINE

TUE 23 JUN 2026

Charities have issued an urgent appeal to LGBT veterans to register for a government compensation scheme before the deadline closes. According to the charities, approximately 1,000 LGBT veterans risk missing the opportunity to claim compensation if they do not come forward. The scheme was established to compensate those who served in the armed forces whilst regulations banned LGBT individuals from serving openly.

The compensation scheme was introduced following years of campaigning by veterans' groups and LGBT organisations. Those eligible must have served in the armed forces prior to the lifting of the ban on LGBT personnel, which occurred in 2000. Charities have emphasised the importance of registering promptly, as those who miss the deadline will be unable to access the compensation retroactively.

Veterans wishing to apply are being encouraged to contact the relevant charities for guidance on the registration process and deadline dates. The charities have stated that support and assistance are available to help veterans navigate the application. No official statement has yet been issued confirming whether the deadline will be extended beyond its current date.
