TRAE YOUNG SIGNS $212M FOUR-YEAR DEAL WITH WIZARDS

TUE 23 JUN 2026 US SPORTS

Trae Young committed to the Washington Wizards by signing a four-year contract worth approximately $212 million, days after declining a $49 million player option. The four-time NBA All-Star will retain a player option in the fourth year of the deal. According to reports, Young chose to remain with the Wizards following a rebuild centred on the team's top selection in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Young's contract carries an estimated annual salary of approximately $47.3 million, representing nearly 30 per cent of the salary cap. The Wizards' payroll now includes Anthony Davis at $58.5 million for the 2026–27 season, placing the team near or at the luxury tax threshold. This financial constraint limits the club's ability to add external free agents through cap space, requiring instead the use of trade exceptions or mid-level exception slots to strengthen the roster around Young and Davis.

Trade speculation has intensified regarding Anthony Davis's future with the franchise, according to NBA reporting. Journalists have reported that Davis remained eligible for a contract extension, and his representation at Klutch Sports had signalled to other teams before the February trade deadline that he sought a maximum extension. Portland was identified as a team potentially positioned to pursue Davis, though such reporting remained speculative rather than confirmed.
