JULIAN ALVAREZ SAYS HE WANTS TO LEAVE ATLETICO MADRID

TUE 23 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

Julian Alvarez has stated his intention to leave Atletico Madrid, saying he wishes to "fulfil his dream" through a transfer. The 26-year-old Argentina striker made the comments after Argentina's World Cup victory over Austria, where he featured as a substitute. Alvarez acknowledged the difficulty of discussing his future publicly but said he aimed to be honest about his position. Barcelona and Paris St-Germain have reportedly expressed interest in signing him, according to reports.

Atletico rejected a 150 million euro offer from Real Madrid for Alvarez in June. Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City for £81.5 million in summer 2024 and has recorded 49 goals and 17 assists across 106 appearances. He scored 17 goals in his first La Liga season but managed eight goals in 2025-26, though he contributed 10 goals in the Champions League as Atletico reached the semi-finals before losing to Arsenal. Alvarez is currently recovering from an ankle injury and has appeared as a substitute in Argentina's first two World Cup matches.

The striker's statement represents his clearest public indication of a desire to move away from the club. Atletico's position on any potential transfer remains unclear, though the club previously rejected Real Madrid's bid for the player. Alvarez's World Cup commitments mean any transfer arrangements would likely take place after the tournament concludes.
