US GOVERNMENT OPPOSES TITANIC ARTIFACT AUCTION PLAN

MON 22 JUN 2026

RMS Titanic Inc, which holds exclusive salvage rights to the Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic, has proposed auctioning more than 100 artifacts recovered from the ship. The objects include personal belongings, currency, kitchen items and decorative pieces such as a bronze cherub, a gold nugget necklace and a heart-shaped pendant. According to newly unsealed court documents, the company intends to display the artifacts on a global tour across four cities before sale, though those locations remain undisclosed. The US government has filed opposition to the proposed auction.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration represents US interests at the wreck site and contends the sale would breach RMS Titanic's legal obligations. Court filings show the government argued that the company "does not seek the court's approval, does not believe that approval is required, and asserts that it is not restricted in its ability to sell" the artifacts. RMS Titanic's legal representatives previously stated that the proposed auction arrangement would not violate existing court orders and agreements. The company did not respond to requests for comment regarding the opposition filing.

RMS Titanic has previously attempted to sell artifacts to fund future exploration and address financial difficulties, efforts that US courts and preservation groups have consistently opposed. Since 1987, salvage operations have retrieved thousands of items and sections of the Titanic's hull, which the company displays at museums and travelling exhibitions to generate revenue. However, items recovered by survivors or rescued from the water by ships' crews have been permitted to sell commercially and typically command significant prices at auction.
