BUMBLEBEES DEMONSTRATE SPONTANEOUS PROBLEM-SOLVING IN NEW STUDY

FRI 05 JUN 2026 OTHER

A new study has found that bumblebees can spontaneously solve problems without prior training or observation of other bees doing the same. Researchers presented bees with a puzzle that required using a tool to access a food reward. The bees solved the task without being taught, demonstrating independent problem-solving behaviour. The findings add to a growing body of evidence on insect cognitive ability.

The study also examined whether bees could use tools as part of their problem-solving process. Researchers confirmed that individual bees applied tools to complete the challenge, a behaviour not previously documented under spontaneous conditions in this species. The experimental design was structured to isolate spontaneous behaviour from learned or socially transmitted responses. Scientists involved in the research stated that the results exceeded their expectations, with one researcher noting the bees "surprise me every time."

The findings carry implications for the scientific understanding of cognition in invertebrates. Bumblebees are among the most studied social insects, yet tool use and spontaneous problem-solving have historically been associated with vertebrates, particularly primates and birds. This study positions bees alongside a narrower group of animals recognised for flexible, goal-directed behaviour. The research has been published and is available for review by the wider scientific community.
