FIVE EYES AGENCIES WARN OF AI MODELS CAPABLE OF TOPPLING GOVERNMENTS

Intelligence agencies from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada issued a joint statement warning that powerful artificial intelligence models capable of dismantling governments and businesses could emerge within months. The statement, released late Monday Sydney time, urged political and business leaders to "act now" in response to the threat. The rare public intervention by signals agencies from the five nations followed the Trump administration's decision earlier this month to restrict foreign nationals from accessing Fable, an advanced AI model developed by technology company Anthropic.

The Five Eyes agencies stated that whilst AI would enhance cyber defence capabilities over time, it would simultaneously accelerate the speed, scale and sophistication of cyber threats. Frontier AI models would exceed current industry expectations and fundamentally transform both offensive and defensive cyber capabilities, the statement said, with the timeline measured in months rather than years. The agencies warned that advances in AI technology would lower barriers for malicious actors and increase the speed and complexity of attacks. Anthropic's latest models include Fable 5, a community-oriented version, and Mythos, a powerful system capable of detecting cyber vulnerabilities that remains available only to vetted organisations due to exploitation concerns.

The Five Eyes agencies emphasised that cyber resilience was integral to business continuity, market confidence and long-term economic value. Cyber risk could no longer be treated as a purely technical matter but must be recognised as a core business and leadership responsibility, the statement continued. The agencies called for a whole-of-organisation and whole-of-society response to the emerging threat. Both Anthropic models were restricted for use by foreign nationals in June by the US government, which cited advice from national security authorities.
