ROYAL MAIL COMMITS £1M TO GREEN SKILLS APPRENTICESHIPS

MON 22 JUN 2026

Royal Mail has allocated £1 million from its apprenticeship levy to fund green skills training for businesses and organisations across England and Wales. The fund supports government-approved apprenticeships in low-carbon heating, electric vehicle infrastructure, energy-efficient construction and sustainable supply chains. Plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople are among the first eligible to access the funding, alongside professionals pursuing degree-level apprenticeships in environmental practice and sustainability business specialism.

Royal Mail framed the initiative as a response to a widening gap between jobs created by the low-carbon transition and workers qualified to fill them. Miles Durrant, Head of Climate Strategy at Royal Mail, stated that as low-carbon technologies become established, the challenge shifts from innovation to deployment of those technologies at scale. The fund can support tradespeople training to install solar panels, heat pumps and electric vehicle charging infrastructure for smaller firms seeking to upskill their workforce.

According to government figures cited in the announcement, the clean energy sector is expected to support more than 860,000 jobs by 2030, roughly double the current workforce. Industry Minister Chris McDonald identified apprenticeships as central to closing the skills gap in the sector. Royal Mail's contribution represents one effort among broader attempts to address the mismatch between job creation and workforce capability in Britain's transition to cleaner energy systems.
