MONAGHAN DEFEATS WESTMEATH TO REACH ALL-IRELAND QUARTER-FINALS
Monaghan progressed to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-finals after defeating Westmeath 1-28 to 2-19 at St Tiernach's Park. The teams were level at 0-15 to 2-9 at half-time following an end-to-end first half in Clones. Monaghan secured victory through a dominant second-half performance, with Jack McCarron scoring a goal as the Farney men pulled away from a tiring Westmeath side to win by six points.
Monaghan's goalkeeper Rory Beggan made an impact in attack during the opening period, landing three two-point free kicks. Westmeath, the Leinster champions, responded with goals from Matthew Whittaker and Brandon Kelly to keep the contest level at the interval. The first half saw both teams trade scores repeatedly, with neither side able to establish a decisive advantage before being pegged back. Michael McCarville and Andrew Woods contributed two-pointers for Monaghan during this period. Despite the competitive opening 40 minutes, Monaghan's intensity increased markedly after the restart.
In the second half, Monaghan registered three successive scores early on and continued to extend their lead through further scores and McCarron's goal. Westmeath managed only sporadic responses to Monaghan's pressure. O'Toole had a significant goal chance for Monaghan but fired wide when through on goal. Monaghan's victory means they advance to face an opponent to be confirmed in the quarter-final stage of the championship.
