DECLAN RICE CONFIRMS LOWER BACK INJURY SUSTAINED SINCE CHRISTMAS

SUN 21 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

Declan Rice stated he remains fit for England's World Cup campaign despite managing a lower back issue that has persisted since December. The Arsenal midfielder was substituted during England's 4-2 group-stage victory against Croatia on Wednesday, having completed 63 matches across club and competition this season. Rice told ITV he intends to feature in England's next group match against Ghana on Tuesday in Boston. He acknowledged the fixture schedule has been "crazy" and described his workload as "obscene" but said players must "get on with it" rather than complain.

Rice's fitness management reflects wider concerns about player welfare during congested schedules. His Arsenal colleague Bukayo Saka is also managing a lingering Achilles problem, illustrating the physical demands placed on squad members. Both players have featured extensively in domestic and international competition throughout the season. Rice stated he is "ready to put his body on the line" and wants to start every game at the tournament.

Rice confirmed he is committed to performing at his highest level during the World Cup despite the accumulated fatigue. He emphasised that players cannot alter fixture congestion and must focus on competing when called upon. England will face Ghana in their second group fixture on Tuesday.
