RUPERT GRINT WINS PERMISSION FOR ECO-VILLAGE ON HERTFORDSHIRE ESTATE
Rupert Grint has been granted full planning permission to develop an eco-village on land he owns in Hertfordshire. North Herts Council's Planning Committee approved the scheme on 10 June, allowing the actor to convert Kimpton Grange in Kimpton into six apartments and construct nine additional homes across the wider estate. The council had previously granted outline planning permission for the work in 2024. As a condition of the final approval, Grint will pay approximately £200,000 towards local infrastructure, comprising £100,000 to Kimpton Parish Council, £70,000 towards expansion of Katherine Warington School, and £11,400 for school places for children with learning difficulties.
Grint, known for playing Ron Weasley in the film adaptations of JK Rowling's novels, purchased Kimpton Grange, a former vicarage, in 2009. The actor attempted to sell the property for an estimated £6m in 2018 but was unsuccessful. Plans for the eco-village were submitted in 2022. Clear Architects, the practice overseeing the development, described the proposals as "truly outstanding and innovative" and stated the scheme will achieve carbon neutrality. The plans include a gift of land to the parish council, which will be developed into a public park and circular walk with a picnic area.
Residents had raised concerns during the planning process about potential harm to woodland and wildlife on the site. The Planning Committee's approval in 2024 proceeded despite these objections from the local community. The development now moves towards implementation following the granting of full planning permission.
