AITCHISON GUIDES DERBYSHIRE TOWARDS VICTORY OVER LANCASHIRE

SAT 20 JUN 2026 CRICKET

Ben Aitchison scored 75 runs from 74 balls as Derbyshire moved towards victory against Lancashire in the County Championship Division Two match at Chesterfield on day two. Aitchison, a fast bowler who scored his maiden first-class hundred against Middlesex last month, shared an eighth wicket stand of 125 with Anuj Dal, who contributed 41. Derbyshire declared on 364, giving them a lead of 203 runs. Lancashire reached 140-6 by close of play, still trailing by 63 runs, with Aitchison taking 3-25 with the ball.

Mitchell Stanley took 5-80 for Lancashire in Derbyshire's innings, but the hosts' batting proved decisive. Lancashire began day two with Derbyshire holding a slender 36-run lead, but the visitors' position deteriorated after lunch. James Anderson opened the bowling and conceded only 18 runs from seven overs without taking a wicket. Wayne Madsen was caught at cover off Stanley's bowling, and Brooke Guest was bowled by Stanley shortly after, reducing Derbyshire's advantage to 73 runs before Dal and Aitchison's partnership transformed the match.

In Lancashire's second innings, seamer Rory Haydon claimed 3-38 alongside Aitchison's bowling. Marcus Harris remained unbeaten on 57 as Lancashire's batting collapsed under pressure from Derbyshire's attack. Keaton Jennings edged to the stumps off Haydon's bowling, and Michael Jones was caught by Guest off the same bowler. Josh Bohannon was trapped lbw by Aitchison as Lancashire's fading hopes rested on Harris and the lower order resuming on day three.
