JOE ROOT REACHES 14,000 TEST RUNS AS ENGLAND FACES HEAVY DEFEAT

SAT 20 JUN 2026

England reached 182 for five in their second innings on the fourth day of the Second Test against New Zealand, requiring 463 runs to avoid defeat or to bat out nearly five sessions. Joe Root, England's interim captain, remained unbeaten on 75 runs. New Zealand bowled Matt Henry in their first innings, who took five wickets in England's opening innings total of 291. New Zealand scored 391 in their first innings and 362 in their second.

Root became only the second player in Test cricket history to surpass 14,000 runs, following Sachin Tendulkar of India. He reached the milestone when he nudged his second run into the off side, prompting a standing ovation. Root walked to the crease when England stood at 13 for two and was later joined by Harry Brook, with the pair adding 97 runs together. Brook was dismissed for 58 after a defensive stroke flew to Daryl Mitchell at slip. Henry's five-wicket performance in England's first innings contributed significantly to New Zealand's position in the match.

If the current trajectory continues, Root will record his 27th Test loss as captain, equalling his tally of wins. The match outcome will affect the series standing, with New Zealand tracking towards a 1-1 result with one Test remaining to play. England's selection strategy, which included three debutants and two players with limited Test experience, has faced scrutiny given the challenging position the team now occupies.
