Five people were injured in Edinburgh on Friday, 19 June, following a series of violent incidents across the west of the city and Leith. Police arrested a 36-year-old Scottish man, who remains in custody. Counter-Terrorism Policing Scotland is investigating the incidents. According to MEND Scotland, a Muslim engagement group, multiple victims are members of the Muslim community.
Two men were found injured near Broomhill Mosque in the Sighthill area at 20:50. A third man, understood to be a Deliveroo driver, was injured on Telford Road, and two further male victims were attacked at Leith Walk. The five victims, aged 22, 22, 24, 27 and 29, sustained injuries that are not life-threatening, although three required hospital treatment. Social media footage showed a man being arrested on Leith Walk and Tasered by officers. A separate video showed a topless man carrying a large blade along the same street. Police also responded to reports of vandalism at retailers across the west and north of the city, including a café on Leith Walk where windows were smashed.
Staff at Origano Cafe & Pizzeria described the attack on their premises as frightening. Video footage showed a topless man smashing windows before staff deployed the shutter to protect those inside.
