ROBERT GRIFFIN III ESCAPES UNINJURED AFTER PLANE ENGINE FIRE

SAT 20 JUN 2026 US SPORTS

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III was aboard United Airlines Flight 102 when the right engine caught fire shortly after takeoff from Houston on 20 June 2026. Griffin stated that he and the other passengers heard 15 consecutive loud bangs immediately following the incident. The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft carried 267 passengers and 13 crew members, all of whom returned to George Bush Intercontinental Airport safely with no injuries reported. Griffin shared video footage of the damaged engine on social media platform X.

The flight was originally scheduled to reach Munich, Germany when pilots detected engine failure and contacted air traffic control. Griffin wrote that he was seated adjacent to the compromised engine, making the experience more alarming for him personally. The pilots successfully managed the emergency and executed a safe landing without incident. Additional footage released by HTX Media documented the engine damage sustained during the flight.

Griffin stated on X that "God is good" following the safe resolution of the emergency. This incident follows a separate car accident involving Griffin in Fort Worth, Texas in October 2025, during which he was travelling with his wife and children and reported the experience as frightening. No further details regarding investigations into the engine failure have been provided at this stage.
