JOAQUIN NIEMANN RECEIVES TWO-SHOT PENALTY FOR US OPEN MISCONDUCT

FRI 19 JUN 2026 GOLF

Joaquin Niemann was handed a two-shot penalty at the US Open after throwing a golf club during play on Thursday. The LIV golfer became the first player to receive a sanction under a new code of conduct rule. Niemann stated he was surprised by the severity of the punishment but confirmed he would learn from the incident.

The penalty was issued following Niemann's conduct at the sixth hole, where he displayed prolonged frustration during play. According to reports, the misconduct came to light when the sanction was announced. Niemann acknowledged his behaviour, telling reporters: "I'm not proud of it."

The two-shot penalty represents the first enforcement of the new code of conduct regulation at the US Open. Niemann said he intended to use the experience to improve his conduct going forward. The incident marked a significant moment in the application of golf's updated disciplinary framework.
