WOMAN JAILED FOR 1978 DEATH OF STEPDAUGHTER IN SCALDING BATH
Janice Nix has been jailed for 12 years after being convicted of the manslaughter of her five-year-old stepdaughter Andrea Bernard. The offence occurred in 1978 at their home in south London, when Nix forced the child into a scalding hot bath as punishment. The conviction follows a prosecution brought nearly 50 years after the girl's death.
Andrea Bernard died from injuries sustained in the incident at the family residence. Nix, now 67, was charged with manslaughter in connection with the case. The prosecution presented evidence that the child had been deliberately placed into water at a temperature that caused fatal scalding injuries.
The case represents a significant development in the prosecution of historical offences. Nix's conviction demonstrates that criminal proceedings can proceed decades after an incident, provided sufficient evidence exists to support a charge. The sentencing to 12 years imprisonment reflects the gravity of the offence as determined by the court.
