FIRE AT TOKYO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROMPTS EVACUATION OF 300
A fire broke out at Takinogawa No 3 Elementary School in central Tokyo on Friday morning, leading to the evacuation or rescue of approximately 300 students and teachers. The Tokyo Fire Department reported that the blaze began late in the morning near a music room on the fourth floor of the four-storey building. Firefighters rescued one teacher and several schoolchildren from the premises, all of whom sustained injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening. All individuals were confirmed to have been safely accounted for following the incident.
Television footage showed thick black smoke emerging from fourth-floor windows as dozens of fire engines attended the scene and crews worked to extinguish the flames. The remaining occupants of the building evacuated independently to a nearby park, with no one remaining inside the structure. The scale of the emergency response reflected the number of people present at the school at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities. The Tokyo Fire Department has not released a timeline for when findings from that investigation may be announced. No statement has been issued regarding any damage assessment of the building or its facilities.
