HOLGER RUNE WITHDRAWS FROM WIMBLEDON CITING ONGOING RECOVERY

FRI 19 JUN 2026 TENNIS

Holger Rune has decided not to compete at Wimbledon this year to prioritise his rehabilitation from a serious injury sustained at the Stockholm Open in October 2025. A statement released through Danish media outlet TV2 Denmark and reposted by Rune on social media confirmed the withdrawal. The statement, issued by his mother and manager Aneke Rune, indicated that both his Achilles tendon and knee were responding positively to treatment and that scans showed positive results.

Rune had been sidelined for more than six months following rupture of his Achilles tendon, which required surgery. He had initially targeted a return to competition at the Hamburg Open in May, but chose to extend his rehabilitation period rather than rush his comeback. The Danish player subsequently withdrew from the Hamburg Open, the French Open and the HSBC Championship earlier in June before making the Wimbledon decision. According to the statement, Rune was able to train at high intensity for extended periods without difficulty and was showing steady progress across all areas of recovery.

In a personal message, Rune stated that missing Wimbledon was not an easy decision but that his long-term objective remained to return to full competitive readiness at the highest level. He expressed satisfaction with his progress and indicated his intention to return to competition in due course. Before his injury, Rune had compiled a 36-22 win-loss record in 2025, having previously held a ranking of world number four.
