ANDY BURNHAM WINS MAKERFIELD BYELECTION WITH LARGE MAJORITY
Andy Burnham has been elected as the Member of Parliament for Makerfield, according to the result declared in the early hours of Friday morning. The byelection saw a turnout exceeding 58 per cent, higher than the general election figure for the constituency. Reform conceded defeat following the declaration. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said she was "cautiously optimistic" when polling closed, but expressed confidence in Burnham's victory before 1am.
In the lead-up to polling day, attention focused on whether Burnham could defeat Reform in a seat where Labour recorded losses across all council election contests weeks earlier. Rupert Lowe's Restore Britain had grown in prominence during the campaign. Some commentary suggested that Restore Britain's presence could split votes on the right and benefit Burnham, though the final result proved decisive without requiring such a dynamic.
Nandy indicated that focus should now turn outward to the country rather than inward to Labour's own difficulties. She stated that Burnham should be "part of the Labour team and heard at the highest levels of government". Her comments came as she addressed questions about what follows the byelection result for the party. The victory marks a significant moment for Labour after recent electoral setbacks in the constituency.
