FOREIGN WORLD CUP FANS REMARK ON SIZE OF US GOODS AND BUILDINGS
International supporters attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States have noted the notably larger scale of American consumer goods and infrastructure compared with their home countries. Ayoub Baghdad, who travelled from Morocco to follow his national team, remarked that carbonated beverages, roads, lorries and buildings all appeared substantially bigger than those he encountered domestically. The observation has become a recurring theme among visiting football fans, with several describing their reactions on social media and in interviews with the BBC.
About 75 per cent of matches in the 2026 tournament are being held in the US, with Mexico and Canada hosting the remainder. This concentration of fixtures has drawn increased numbers of international supporters, many of whom have documented their experiences exploring American culture through videos and social media posts. Visitors have highlighted their visits to establishments such as Waffle House, Buc-ee's convenience stores, and major supermarkets, with several commenting on portion sizes in restaurants and the range of flavours in both fast-food and independent dining establishments. Ire Balogun, travelling from Oxford, stated he found American food offered more flavour than comparable options in England, whilst João Valentim and his group of Portuguese graduate students noted the similarity between US chain restaurants and imagery from films and television programmes.
Shaun, a vlogger from Scotland, described a Buc-ee's location as something that could only exist in America, referencing the chain's status as a combination convenience store, restaurant, petrol station and supermarket. The Southern-based chain maintains a significant following amongst US consumers, with locations featuring a Beaver mascot that attracts visitor photographs.
