SENATE COMMITTEE ADVANCES COLLEGE SPORTS BILL OPPOSED BY SEC AND BIG TEN

THU 18 JUN 2026 OTHER

The Senate Commerce Committee voted 19-9 on Thursday to advance the Protect College Sports Act to a full Senate floor vote. The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Senator Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat, and Senator Ted Cruz, faced opposition from the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten Conference. Following the committee's passage of the bill, Cantwell issued a public statement criticising the two conferences and their leadership.

Cantwell alleged that SEC and Big Ten commissioners had intimidated university leaders into opposing the legislation by threatening to alter game scheduling arrangements. She stated that conference executives were treating university presidents and athletic directors as subordinates rather than independent decision-makers, and suggested that some school board members were now questioning their institutions' opposition to the bill. Cantwell claimed that athletic directors and presidents would face scrutiny from regents over letters they had sent opposing the legislation.

The bill now proceeds toward consideration by the full Senate. Cantwell's comments represent an escalation in the public dispute between her office and the two major conferences regarding the future regulation of college sports. The legislation remains contested, with the SEC and Big Ten maintaining their opposition to the measure as it advances through the legislative process.
