MLB OWNERS PROPOSE BAN ON SECONDARY SCHOOL PLAYER SIGNINGS

THU 18 JUN 2026 US SPORTS

Major League Baseball owners have proposed banning the signing of secondary school players and introducing an international draft, according to reports. The proposals form part of broader changes to player recruitment procedures. Players including Mike Trout, Manny Machado and Clayton Kershaw were drafted directly from secondary school under current rules.

The proposals would also raise the minimum age for international amateur signings. The draft itself would reportedly be restructured, with a reduction in the number of rounds conducted. These changes represent a significant shift from established MLB recruitment practices that have operated for decades.

The proposals remain subject to negotiation between ownership and players' representatives. MLB owners initiated the suggestions as part of wider discussions on the sport's regulatory framework. No timeline has been confirmed for a decision on whether the proposals will be adopted.
