AMERICAN HOUSEHOLDS SPEND $800 ON HOME COOLING AS BILLS RISE

THU 18 JUN 2026 PERSONAL FINANCE

The average American family will spend nearly $800 this summer to cool their homes, according to figures cited by Mark Wolfe of the National Energy Assistance Directors Association. This represents an increase of almost 40% compared with 2020 and a rise of 10.5% from the previous summer. Wolfe stated that middle-class families are increasingly facing financial pressures previously associated with lower-income households, with many draining savings accounts and carrying larger credit card balances to cover basic expenses.

Americans carry more than $1.2 trillion in credit card debt, with nearly 60% reporting that they live paycheck to paycheck, according to the figures presented. One in six households is behind on utility bill payments, and utility companies disconnect electric service more than 13 million times annually. Wolfe noted that nearly 40% of lower-income households struggle to pay energy bills. Moody's estimates that oil market disruptions over the previous three months cost the average family $450, reducing funds available for groceries, healthcare and utilities.

Wolfe contended that stock market performance does not reflect the economic experience of most Americans. The stock market has more than doubled since 2020, benefiting those holding substantial financial assets, he stated. However, he argued that for ordinary families, economic conditions are measured by petrol prices, grocery costs and monthly utility bills rather than by indices such as the S&P 500. Wolfe expressed concern that rising energy costs are affecting households across income levels.
