JAMIE VARLEY SENTENCED TO WHOLE LIFE ORDER FOR MURDER OF ADOPTED SON

THU 18 JUN 2026 UK POLITICS

Jamie Varley has been sentenced to a whole life order for the murder of Preston Davey, his 13-month-old adoptive son. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, received a 25-year sentence for allowing the death of a child, two counts of child cruelty and one count of sexual assault of a child. The sentencing took place at Preston Crown Court. Mr Justice Turner told Varley: "You will be in prison for the rest of your life."

Preston Davey died on 27 July 2023 after being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital following a collapse and cardiac arrest. Analysis of the couple's mobile phones revealed that the infant had suffered 40 external and internal traumatic injuries consistent with sexual abuse before his death. Preston's birth mother, Sarah Davey, wept throughout the court proceedings and collapsed into a friend's arms after the sentences were passed. Preston's grandmother, Debra Davey, was physically supported by family members whilst in court.

The judge commended those present for the restraint shown throughout sentencing, during which details of Preston's treatment were disclosed. Preston's birth mother told the court that part of her had died with him and that she would never forgive those responsible. The case involved adoption authorities and child safeguarding processes, though specific details of how the couple came to adopt Preston remain subject to ongoing investigation and review.
