IAIN ROBERTSON DENIES RAPE CHARGES IN LAKE DISTRICT CASE

THU 18 JUN 2026 CRIME

Actor Iain Robertson has denied raping a woman during a 2007 holiday in the Lake District, telling the High Court in Glasgow that she initiated sexual contact. Robertson, who appeared in River City, faces seven charges spanning 2004 to 2020, including allegations of rape and physical assault against four women. The prosecution withdrew an eighth charge on Wednesday. Robertson denied the Lake District allegation during Thursday's evidence, stating the woman came to bed in the early hours after he had gone to sleep.

Robertson told the court that he and the woman had disagreed over a word game earlier that evening. He said the game involved substituting film titles with a word the woman had explicitly prohibited him from using. Robertson stated he questioned why he could not use the word when she used it herself, then went to bed. The woman later joined him, and Robertson said she was the one who initiated sexual contact when she came to bed in the small hours of the morning.

Robertson faces separate charges of rape involving another woman "on various occasions" between 2018 and 2019, as well as offences involving two other women. The trial continues at the High Court in Glasgow. Robertson denies all remaining charges brought against him.
