NYPD DEPLOYS 10,000 OFFICERS FOR KNICKS CHAMPIONSHIP PARADE
The New York City Police Department has issued security protocols for the New York Knicks' championship celebration parade, scheduled for Thursday, 18 June. The parade will begin at 10:00 AM at Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan and proceed through the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway before ending at City Hall. The NYPD statement outlined that all attendees will be screened, bags will not be permitted, and designated pens will open at 6:00 AM.
The protocols follow the Knicks' 4-1 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, which secured the franchise's first NBA title since 1973. The NYPD anticipates upwards of two million attendees at the parade. To manage the expected crowds, the department will deploy over 10,000 officers, representing the largest single-event deployment in NYPD history, and will include Counterterrorism, Special Operations Division, and Aviation units.
The scale of security measures reflects concerns arising from previous incidents during NBA-related events in the city, according to the NYPD's statement. The department emphasised in its official guidance that attendees should arrive early to accommodate screening procedures. The NYPD encouraged the public to follow the announced safety protocols to ensure the celebration proceeds without incident.
