STEPHEN HOUGH RELEASES ALBUM OF CLASSICAL MUSIC TRANSCRIPTIONS

THU 18 JUN 2026

Pianist and composer Stephen Hough has released an album of transcriptions of existing classical works. The project examines the history of musical reworking, a practice undertaken by composers including Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Franz Liszt elevated transcription to such technical heights that the genre nearly collapsed under the weight of virtuosic expectation. Hough's album arrives as transcriptions remain undervalued within classical music circles, despite their historical importance.

Transcriptions have long formed the backbone of jazz and popular music performance in clubs and hotel lounges. Within classical music, however, they were for many years regarded unfavourably by critics and institutions. The practice involves reimagining existing compositions for different instruments or ensembles, requiring both technical skill and interpretive judgement. Hough's work as both performer and composer positions him to explore how transcription functions as both homage and creative act.

The album demonstrates that transcription remains a legitimate and artistically valuable pursuit within classical music. Hough's project challenges the perception that reworking established pieces represents secondary or derivative composition. By documenting the practice's history through his own recordings, he argues for reassessment of transcription's place within the classical canon. The release provides contemporary evidence that the form continues to merit serious artistic engagement.
