RINEHART PROPOSES OFFERING ISLANDS TO MUSK FOR SPACEX OPERATIONS
Gina Rinehart has proposed that Australia offer Elon Musk islands free of charge to construct and launch satellites, according to remarks made at a News Corp summit in Townsville on Thursday. The proposal, detailed in a transcript from Hancock Prospecting, identifies six islands near Townsville—Magnetic, Rattlesnake, Acheron, Palm, Orpheus and Pelorus—as potential sites for SpaceX operations. Rinehart suggested Australia provide water and necessary infrastructure to support the venture. She argued the arrangement would benefit Australian university graduates by creating opportunities to work with world-leading facilities locally rather than relocating overseas.
Rinehart, Australia's richest woman, made the proposal as part of a broader argument against government regulation and high taxation. Her speech included calls to close overlapping federal departments, including those overseeing climate change, agriculture and industry, to reduce federal spending. Rinehart stated satellite launches would generate tourism benefits for the region. She made a significant investment in SpaceX earlier in the week, with reported figures suggesting the amount reached $1.4 billion.
Rinehart also proposed offering land to skilled Israeli workers to manufacture advanced defence technologies, and suggested the inland town of Prairie, located 340 kilometres from Townsville, could attract Taiwan's computer chip manufacturing sector. She was introduced at the summit by Pauline Hanson. Hancock Prospecting's transcript recorded these proposals, which remain unconfirmed as policy positions by any government body.
