RUSSIA REPORTS 555 UKRAINIAN DRONES INTERCEPTED ACROSS REGIONS

THU 18 JUN 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Russia reported that its air defences intercepted 555 Ukrainian drones in an overnight aerial assault, according to official claims. Moscow's airports suspended flights, and traffic halted near an oil refinery following multiple drone strikes. Moscow's mayor Sergei Sobhyanin stated that approximately 180 drones targeting the capital were successfully downed. Online footage depicted large explosions at the refinery, including an incident showing an oil container lid being propelled into the air.

The attacks followed a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron after the G7 summit. Social media videos, described as unverified, purported to show large columns of black smoke over Moscow's skyline and drones flying overhead. The scale of the reported assault represents what Russian sources characterised as Ukraine's largest attack on Russia in recent years.

No independent confirmation of Russia's interception figures has been reported. The actual extent of damage and the accuracy of the claimed defence figures remain unverified. The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
