TUCHEL URGED ENGLAND TO PLAY WITH COURAGE AT CROATIA HALF-TIME

THU 18 JUN 2026

Thomas Tuchel told England's players to abandon caution and play with courage during half-time of their World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas, according to accounts from the manager and captain Harry Kane. England had twice surrendered the lead by the interval, with Tuchel identifying repeated backwards passing and reluctance to play through gaps as the primary failings. Rather than raise his voice, Tuchel positioned himself at eye-level with his players and emphasised the importance of calm and trust.

Tuchel instructed his squad to play "our way" and to discard fear, telling them his assessment of the team would not be altered by the result. Kane reported that Tuchel framed potential defeat as acceptable if achieved through brave, attacking football, urging the players to "let the shackles off". Tuchel emphasised that England possessed sufficient quality to compete with any opponent and encouraged his team to be active, intense and united in their approach.

England's second-half performance vindicated the tactical message, according to Tuchel's own evaluation. Kane scored two first-half goals, with Jude Bellingham adding a third after the interval and Marcus Rashford securing a fourth in a 4-2 victory. Tuchel stated he "loved" the team's reaction and the intensity with which they executed their attacking approach during the second half.
